Singapore, 2003 RITUAL: Cooking for herself is a twice-daily ritual for Loh Ah Kwai, 91, who lives alone in a one-room rental flat. She boils most of her food. Here, she boils some choy sim with a lump of ginger in a pot she picked up from the trash. She said in Cantonese, "These days, people like things new. Someone had burnt food in this pot and decided to throw it away. But it's still good."
